Lochs and Mountains Itinerary (LAM01)Moderate

Day 1 – Pitlochry

The first day is spent in and around the pretty highland town of Pitlochry, famed for its salmon ladder (to help wild salmon get to their spawning grounds) and whisky distillery (the smallest in Scotland). Guests can explore the town or perhaps take a spin up to the famous battleground of Killiecrankie, the site of a famous Jacobite victory over the forces of the English King.

Day 2 – Pitlochry to Kinloch Rannoch (42 miles)

Setting off from Pitlochry, we follow the course of the River Tummel, passing the loch of the same name (one of Queen Victoria's favourite spots) and the smaller Dunalastair Water. We then meet our third loch of the day, Loch Rannoch, surrounded by forests and overlooked by some majestic mountains. After cycling around its circumference we stop for the night in the village of Kinloch Rannoch.

Day 3 – Kinloch Rannoch to Aberfeldy (20 miles)

We head off around the base of the impressive mountain Schiehallion, before climbing up on to the surrounding moorland and weaving in between smaller hills and mountains. This part of the ride offers some great views and is well worth the extra effort in getting up there. Added to that is the sheer fun of free-wheeling down past waterfalls and mystical stone circles to the day's destination, Aberfeldy.

Day 4 – Aberfeldy to Pitlochry (30 miles)

Back on the flat, we follow the River Tay downstream past pretty villages and ancient forests to the cathedral town of Dunkeld. This is the burial site of the 'Wolf of Badenoch', an infamous and violent nobleman who terrorized the area 700 years ago. His tomb, with the requisite armoured statue of himself, can still be seen within the grounds of the cathedral. From here it is a short cycle back up the glen to our final destination and the origin of the trip, Pitlochry.
