Southern Scotland Skedaddle (SSS01) - Moderate
to Challenging
Day 1 – Arrival in Melrose (9 miles optional)
The first day of the tour is spent in the charming border town of Melrose, famed for its wonderful Abbey and its legendary rugby team. Guests can explore the town at their leisure or tackle the short loop around the Eildon Hills to the village of Newtown St. Boswells and back. There are also lots of excellent coffee shops in Melrose, perfect for loading up with carbs for the ride ahead!
Day 2 – Melrose to Hawick (27 miles)
Leaving Melrose behind, we journey past Abbotsford House, the one time home of Sir Walter Scott. After a relatively easy going first few miles through forests and fields, following the River Tweed, we tackle the first of three short, but quite steep hills. These each afford a different, but equally breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside and are well worth the effort. Finally, we descend into the outskirts of Hawick, and a well-deserved beer.
Day 3 – Hawick to The Gordon Arms Hotel (31 miles)
The hilly theme of this tour is continued today as we tackle another three short, sharp climbs deep into the Border hills. This part of the holiday however is incredibly peaceful as we ride along deserted farm roads where stray sheep are more of a hazard than other traffic. We spend the night at a lovely historic hotel which has always been a haven for those that appreciate the great outdoors, as evidenced by the fact that it can claim William Wordsworth, Robert Burns and Sir Walter Scott as past guests.
Day 4 – The Gordon Arms Hotel to Melrose (25 miles)
The final day of this tour takes us up and over one more challenging climb right at the start of the day, leaving a mostly downhill coast back into Melrose. On the way we pass Traquair House, the seat of power of the Stuart clan (formerly Kings and Queens of Scotland), and meet the River Tweed once more, using it as a guide for the last part of our journey.
