Border Raider (BRA01) - Moderate
Day 1 – Arrival in Berwick-Upon-Tweed
The first day can be spent exploring the historic, walled fortress town of Berwick-Upon-Tweed. This has been the site for many dramatic events over the years, and visitors can walk around the walls or visit the harbour or castle. There are also many very good cafes and restaurants where we can stock up on some well needed fuel for the journey ahead.
Day 2 – Berwick-Upon-Tweed to Kelso (35 miles)
We begin the day by crossing and recrossing the border three times within our first 12 miles, with an opportunity for a delicious cake and coffee at the excellent Chain Bridge Honey Farm. The cycling today is very flat and we follow Sustrans route 1 for the duration of the ride, through farmland and forests and past landmarks such as Norham Castle and the abandoned convent in Eccles. The cobbled streets of Kelso provide welcome respite at the end of the day.
Day 3 – Kelso to Melrose (15 miles)
Today is a shorter day in the saddle as we steadily climb towards the beautiful border town of Melrose. There are opportunities to extend today's cycling however, with optional detours to see William Wallace's statue, an ancient Roman fort and two stunning old Abbeys. Once arrived in Melrose, guests can wander the streets of this pretty little town and perhaps visit Abbotsford House, the former home of Sir Walter Scott.
Day 4 – Melrose
Guests can have a day away from the saddle today in order to better explore this lovely town, or tackle one of a number of short rides in the surrounding area. Potential destinations include Traquair House, the Eildon Hills or the town of Selkirk.
Day 5 – Melrose to Jedburgh (29 miles)
This section of the tour travels through especially beautiful and serene countryside, taking in Whitlaw Nature Reserve (a haven for wild birds). The terrain is a little hillier than it has been up to this point, but the views more than make up for the extra effort. We spend our 5th night in the quaint village of Jedburgh, home to another spectacular Abbey and ancient prison.
Day 6 – Jedburgh to Norham (34 miles)
We cross back into England today, just after passing through the twin villages of Kirk Yetholm and Town Yetholm. The Battle of Flodden Field provides a historical backdrop for the day's cycle, the scene of a bloody Scottish defeat in 1513, and we pass two more impressive castles on our way to Norham. The terrain is still a little hilly at this point although we have started to descend towards the coast.
Day 7 – Norham to Berwick-Upon-Tweed (9 miles)
The final day is an easy cruise back to the sea and our place of origin, Berwick-Upon-Tweed. Travelling through flat farmland, guests can take their time enjoying the last relaxing moments of their holiday, before beginning their journey back to reality.
